Penelope I’m not sure I could stand to save the prince could I stay awake I would kill the suitors to save my life But I will not marry to save theirs Call me vain and lazy But it’s the gods who close my eyes sweet relief in slumber beauty rests divine Would I had a hatchet to split this carven bed! Twenty years of waiting of sleeping alone My husband is no longer mine He sleeps away with nymphs and whispers in their ears The sea is his lover as war and words and gold I am strong as this olive bed And as unused I could cure my affliction But the gods keep me still
